Mechanisms and biomarkers of airway epithelial cell damage in asthma: A review

چکیده
Bronchial asthma is a heterogeneous disease with complex pathological mechanisms representing different phenotypes, including severe asthma. The airway epithelium major site of changes in due, part, to activation inflammatory and immune response noxious agents. Current imaging procedures are unable accurately measure epithelial remodeling. Damage cells occurs linked specific phenotypes endotypes which provides an opportunity for the identification biomarkers reflecting epithelial, airway, Identification patients more disruption using may also provide personalised therapeutic opportunities and/or markers successful intervention. Here, we review evidence ongoing cell dysregulation pathogenesis asthma, sentinel role how understanding these molecular basis candidate prediction, prevention, diagnosis, treatment monitoring.

Asthma, airway inflammation and epithelial damage in elite athletes.
I n recent years there has been special focus on the increased occurrence of asthma and bronchial responsiveness among top athletes within endurance sports. As early as 1989, an increase in nonspecific bronchial responsiveness after heavy endurance training was found in young competitive swimmers [1]. Later, reports were made concerning increased prevalence of asthma and bronchial hyperresponsi...
متن کاملMechanisms of surface-tension-induced epithelial cell damage in a model of pulmonary airway reopening.
Airway collapse and reopening due to mechanical ventilation exerts mechanical stress on airway walls and injures surfactant-compromised lungs. The reopening of a collapsed airway was modeled experimentally and computationally by the progression of a semi-infinite bubble in a narrow fluid-occluded channel. The extent of injury caused by bubble progression to pulmonary epithelial cells lining the...
متن کاملCorticosteroid-induced apoptosis of airway epithelium: a potential mechanism for chronic airway epithelial damage in asthma.
Damage to the airway epithelium is one prominent feature of chronic asthma. Mucosal damage includes gap openings, partial denudation, and loss of ciliated cells. Apoptosis of the airway epithelium is increasingly recognized as a potential mechanism by which damage may occur. Corticosteroids (CSs) induce apoptosis in inflammatory cells, which in part explains their ability to suppress airway inf...

RATIONALE Despite long-term therapy with corticosteroids, patients with severe asthma develop irreversible airway obstruction. OBJECTIVES To evaluate if there are structural and functional differences in the airway epithelium in severe asthma associated with airway remodeling. METHODS In bronchial biopsies from 21 normal subjects, 11 subjects with chronic bronchitis, 9 subjects with mild as...
